Melody Edwards is a lifelong entrepreneur with a sparkly brain and a passion for building purpose-driven businesses. Over the past 25 years, she has successfully started, acquired, operated, and sold a variety of unconventional businesses, ultimately leading her to co-found HomeServiceVA.com with her first assistant, Din. Together, they built the company they wished had existed when they first started working together—a virtual assistant matchmaking agency that helps entrepreneurs streamline their operations with effective systems and talented virtual collaborators.

Being diagnosed with ADHD as a young adult changed her life. With newfound insight and understanding, Melody set out to master her brain's unique wiring, creating systems that allowed her to thrive in the "sparkliest" parts of her brain while delegating tasks that drained her. One of the most transformative decisions she made was hiring an Executive Assistant, which expedited her impact by allowing her to focus on the big projects and ideas that energize her.

Through her podcast, The Business Misfits, Melody shares insights from her decades-long business journey and interviews fellow unconventional entrepreneurs to empower others to embrace their inner "Bizfit" and build businesses on their own terms. Her mission is to help purpose-driven business owners craft their path with creativity, intuition, and heart.

Outside of business, Melody is a creative human who loves ALL THE THINGS… friends, AI, singing, bike rides, camping, crafting, ice cream, and building things. She lives in Western Massachusetts with her husband Matt, their children Sophia and Max, and their dog Shaun.

Speaker:

Hello, BizFit.

2

:

It is I, Melody, your lady of business.

3

:

I'm going to talk about something I find

very counterintuitive and it's something

4

:

I'm actively exploring this year.

5

:

It's how the key to growth might actually

be unlearning, not learning more.

6

:

recently I attended an AI conference

and after that conference, my

7

:

brain shut down for like a week.

8

:

my brain was so oversaturated with

information, that it got me to a

9

:

surprising yet not surprising realization.

10

:

I'm an information hoarder.

11

:

I've spent most of my life on learning

autopilot thinking that if I kept

12

:

growing, kept pushing forward, I'd

eventually break through My old mindsets.

13

:

But what if that's exactly

what's keeping me stuck.

14

:

you know, that feeling when you're

scrolling through Amazon self help

15

:

section, you think maybe this book will

be the one that changes everything.

16

:

My audible library is a monument of self.

17

:

Improvement and every title is

like a tower of transformation

18

:

that I'm trying to build.

19

:

I have courses on everything from

marketing to mindset and breaking

20

:

habits and building new ones.

21

:

And you want to know the crazy thing with

all of that knowledge, all of that wisdom

22

:

at my fingertips, I am stuck because that

new knowledge, it's sitting on top of my

23

:

old, deep, Unconscious beliefs, and I've

finally reached the point of understanding

24

:

that more information isn't the answer.

25

:

It's actually just exhausting.

26

:

I'm, just like everybody else.

27

:

I'm highlighting quotes and saving

posts that I never go back to.

28

:

I learned so much that

I can't possibly ever.

29

:

Implement, we're filtering our

information based on our beliefs, our

30

:

values, our assessment of the person

who's giving us the information.

31

:

Work, family, social

media, podcasts, news.

32

:

But here's what I keep wondering.

33

:

How do I know which pieces of

information are actually meant for me?

34

:

Sometimes the most profound advice

or wisdom can be completely wrong,

35

:

for where you are in your journey.

36

:

it's like being handed a map to Paris when

you're actually traveling in New York.

37

:

The map is not wrong.

38

:

It's just not meant for you.

39

:

And where you are right now.

40

:

we collect all the maps, thinking

someday that they'll make sense.

41

:

someday maybe we'll need them, but maybe

what we need isn't just another map.

42

:

Maybe we need to stop and

figure out where we are.

43

:

So I'm stopping to figure out where I am.

44

:

I'm on A mind excavation journey,

because I believe that even though it's

45

:

the hardest work that I will probably

do, I think it's the best thing that

46

:

I can do, which is questioning what

I've always thought that I've known.

47

:

And that's really scary, because

it's challenging my beliefs.

48

:

It's uncertainty.

49

:

I believe though, that my freedom

is going to come when I consciously

50

:

choose what to keep and what to let go.

51

:

we have a lot of resistance in ourselves.

52

:

And I think that resistance is

the roadmap to show us exactly

53

:

what we need to be looking at.

54

:

So here's some steps that are important

if you want to go on this journey with me.

55

:

You have to be aware.

56

:

That's the first step.

57

:

Every time you feel that

resistance, that's the roadmap.

58

:

So you have to be looking for it.

59

:

And then you should ask

yourself a simple question.

60

:

Where did I learn this?

61

:

who taught me this is

this actually my truth?

62

:

Or is it something I

learned from somebody else?

63

:

Is it somebody else's beliefs?

64

:

Just start to notice all the

ways that shows up in your life

65

:

So let me share a tool that's

pretty powerful, I think, because

66

:

it's so simple and it's very

helpful in the unlearning process.

67

:

It's the five Y's Here's how it works.

68

:

When you find that you have a

belief that's limiting you just

69

:

ask yourself why five times.

70

:

And then each time the answer is

going to lead you to a deeper layer.

71

:

So I'm going to give you an example.

72

:

This is something I hear

from people all the time.

73

:

I could never start my own business.

74

:

So let's look at that.

75

:

Well, why?

76

:

Well, because I'm not the

type of person who does that.

77

:

So that's the little boxes that

we put ourselves in, right?

78

:

And then I could ask, well, why

aren't you that type of person?

79

:

Well, because successful business

owners want to, you know, they

80

:

they're naturally confident.

81

:

They went to business

school, they're organized.

82

:

well, why do you believe that?

83

:

because every entrepreneur I know

seems to have it all figured out.

84

:

Why does that even matter?

85

:

Well, because I don't feel

like I have it all figured out.

86

:

So I won't be good at it

and I don't want to fail.

87

:

that gap between who we think

we need to be and who we are

88

:

right now is very powerful,

89

:

Why do I believe I need to

have it all figured out first?

90

:

Well, because I was taught that you

should only do things when you're

91

:

completely prepared and certain.

92

:

obviously it's not like you

ask five questions and then

93

:

suddenly you have an epiphany.

94

:

But if you actually took the time and

really thought it out, maybe journaled

95

:

it out, you'd be surprised at what

comes out when you do a little thinking.

96

:

But also thinking is hard.

97

:

And we like to distract from that.

98

:

I'm very guilty of that every day,

but you know, that's where you're

99

:

going to find your core belief, that

you might not have recognized before.

100

:

So let me give you a quick practical

exercise that you can do right now.

101

:

You can just use your phone.

102

:

Just write down or think of two or

three things that you can never do

103

:

perhaps it's public speaking or karaoke

or starting a podcast, asking for

104

:

a raise, building a house, holding

a snake like I did in December.

105

:

think about the ones that you chose.

106

:

Well, who.

107

:

Told you that you couldn't do it.

108

:

Was it society?

109

:

Was it your parents?

110

:

And then after you've thought of that, ask

yourself one last question, which is if no

111

:

one had ever told me this, would I believe

it, it's such a simple question, but how

112

:

many of us are brave enough to really dig

deep into ourselves to find the answer,

113

:

not many, because here's the truth, as

I've gone on this journey in the past.

114

:

It's left a lot of space.

115

:

And for me, space is very

uncomfortable We all want control.

116

:

I decided that unlearn was going to

be my word of:

117

:

to stay at the forefront of my mind.

118

:

I've been doing, ketamine therapy in the

past year and it's really changed my life.

119

:

I don't do it often, but I'm, shocked

at how quickly it's broken through

120

:

barriers in my brain that I have worked

on for years in traditional therapy.

121

:

the last time that I did it, or two

times ago, was my greatest, breakthrough.

122

:

in that session, you go deep

in your brain and you're not in

123

:

fear of what you're going to see.

124

:

You're not in fear of the answers.

125

:

You're just curious, or at

least I am in these sessions.

126

:

I'm just curious.

127

:

I don't feel scared.

128

:

And I'm just investigating.

129

:

I went into that session with the

intention of understanding confidence.

130

:

Why don't I have confidence?

131

:

How can I get confidence?

132

:

by the end of that, I understood

that I already knew everything

133

:

that I needed to know.

134

:

I will never know all the things in

my Subconscious mind, I thought that

135

:

I would somehow learn everything in

the entire universe and then I could

136

:

feel confident, which is ridiculous.

137

:

It's what I was struggling with but

it's what I want I want to trust my gut.

138

:

I've earned that.

139

:

on that, ketamine journey, it was,

Kind of understanding that the wisdom

140

:

I have right now is exactly what I

need I think it's the same for all of

141

:

us, what we know right now, if we're

growth minded, trying to become the

142

:

best versions of ourselves, it's what

I've been thinking about a lot lately.

143

:

But I, feel like I need to pause

the learning and just do some,

144

:

you know, focused un learning.

145

:

I don't know, we'll see at the end

of the year if this word of the year

146

:

brings me to where I want to be.

147

:

ironically, last year, my word of

the year was confidence and I did.

148

:

End up with confidence.

149

:

I don't think it was on purpose because

I kind of forgot my word of the year

150

:

halfway through, but when I looked

back at my journal, there it was.

151

:

some would say I manifested it.

152

:

Others would say I

worked hard to get there.

153

:

either way, it was exciting for me

to finally feel like I had settled

154

:

that long, fight in my mind.

155

:

In December, I was in the

Philippines with my team, and we

156

:

ended up at this animal reserve.

157

:

I didn't know that this was a

place where I was going to walk

158

:

in and be surrounded by pythons.

159

:

I'm terrified of snakes.

160

:

I really am.

161

:

It's one of my biggest fears.

162

:

I think a snake ran over my foot when

I was in second or third grade, so

163

:

being in that room where there were

pythons on the floor, It was terrifying.

164

:

My heart was beating.

165

:

My palms were sweaty.

166

:

I was practically crying.

167

:

Everything felt just

like a fight or flight.

168

:

I was in fight or flight mode.

169

:

But my whole team, was there with me.

170

:

I made a spur of the moment

commitment that I was going to

171

:

chase that fear a little bit.

172

:

so I went and I sat down and I held a

snake it was hilarious because if you

173

:

look at the photos of me, I'm crying,

because I hated it so much, but also

174

:

I was thrilled that I did it because

every time I do something like that.

175

:

something that's like this deep held

belief that I am terrified of snakes.

176

:

And then I faced that fear.

177

:

it leads me to places that I never

would have imagined I'm still afraid

178

:

of snakes though, but maybe next time

I'll hold a Python again, And I won't

179

:

be as terrified anyway, do something

that scares you a little bit this week.

180

:

you have to think what's

the worst that can happen.

181

:

There's really not a lot of

things that can happen to us.

182

:

our minds convince us that there are.

183

:

And I think most of those are

just fear of failure, fear of

184

:

embarrassment or humiliation.

185

:

Sometimes it's fear of success.

186

:

There's so many things that limit us

fear of being seen as overconfident or

187

:

aggressive, take a little bit of a step.

188

:

Outside of your fear or poke the

fear that's what I'm going to do.

189

:

I'm already poking the fear.

190

:

What is your word of the year?

191

:

And what are you afraid of?

192

:

what are the things that

you need to unlearn?

193

:

you know, remember every

belief that we unlearn.

194

:

Create space for something new,

something that's authentically,

195

:

genuinely going to be yours.

196

:

I hope this was helpful.

197

:

Keep questioning, keep unlearning and

growing, and I will see you next week.
